Halston's heritage and renovation work spans listed and protected buildings, historically significant unlisted buildings within conservation areas, and substantial heritage residential renovations. Every project begins with thorough survey work and engagement with the relevant heritage authorities. We see old buildings not as constraints but as collaborators, full of intelligence about material, climate, and craft that still has much to teach.

  • Listed building consent applications and heritage statements for protected building works
  • Conservation and restoration of historic fabric using traditional methods and materials
  • Contemporary intervention and extension within heritage settings
  • Condition surveys, fabric analysis, and significance assessments
  • Sensitive performance upgrades and retrofit of historic homes

Research before intervention

No design decision is made before the building has been thoroughly understood. Historic research, fabric survey, and significance assessment underpin every proposal. We trace how a building has changed over time, what is original, what is later addition, and what carries the meaning that must be protected.

Honest contemporary contrast

Where contemporary intervention is appropriate, it is detailed to read clearly as new work, in dialogue with the historic fabric rather than in imitation of it. A confident new insertion, honestly expressed, respects an old building more than a timid pastiche that blurs the line between centuries.

Long relationships with craft

Our specialist craft partners, in stone, lime, lead, oak, and traditional joinery, are central to the delivery of conservation work to the required standard. Heritage work is only ever as good as the hands that execute it, and we protect these relationships as carefully as we protect the buildings themselves.

Performance without damage

Historic buildings can be made comfortable and efficient, but only with the right approach. We use breathable, moisture-open materials and reversible interventions, improving warmth and energy performance without trapping moisture or stripping away the character that makes the building worth keeping.

Navigating consents

We manage the full statutory process on your behalf, from pre-application discussions with conservation officers to the preparation of heritage statements and consent applications. Our familiarity with the process means fewer surprises, smoother approvals, and a clear path from idea to permission.

Building for the next century

Conservation is an act of stewardship. Every repair and intervention is carried out with the next hundred years in mind, using durable materials and sound detailing so that the building is handed on in better condition than we found it.

Reading the existing fabric

Our heritage practice begins with thorough documentation and analysis of the existing fabric. Every intervention is informed by a deep understanding of the building's history, construction, and significance.

Old and new, in dialogue

Contemporary intervention in heritage settings demands restraint and confidence in equal measure. We work closely with conservation officers, structural engineers, and craftspeople to deliver work that respects what came before.
