Hexagon Office

Location

Mitte, Berlin, Germany

Project duration

28 months

Area

4,800 m²

Year

2023

Hexagon Office is a 4,800 m² headquarters building for an independent European media company on a constrained corner site in Berlin Mitte. Halston was appointed in 2020 to deliver the full architectural service from initial concept through to building handover in autumn 2023.

The brief called for a workspace for 280 employees, a 600 m² ground-floor public café and bookshop, three meeting and event spaces, and a rooftop pavilion for company gatherings and external hire. Sustainability targets were set at the highest available German standard for new commercial construction.

  • 4,800 m² net internal area across seven storeys including ground-floor retail and rooftop pavilion
  • Workspace planned for 280 employees with flexible team neighbourhoods, focus rooms, and shared amenities
  • DGNB Platinum rating achieved through fabric performance, low embodied carbon, and renewable energy strategy
  • Hexagonal column grid allowing column-free open floors and a distinctive faceted facade

Site and form

The constrained corner site demanded a building that worked hard at the public edge. The ground floor is held back from the street to create a covered colonnade and pedestrian routes, with the public café and bookshop occupying the most active corner.

  • Hexagonal column grid resolves the awkward corner geometry and gives the building its name
  • Faceted glass curtain wall with bronze-anodised aluminium framing
  • Public colonnade and arcade at ground floor extending the pavement into the building
  • Two-storey rooftop pavilion in lightweight steel and glass for events and company gatherings

Workplace interiors

The workplace interior was designed in parallel with the architecture, ensuring a coherent material and spatial language throughout. The fit-out specifies high-quality, durable materials selected for long service life and low embodied carbon.

"The hexagonal column grid solved a problem we had not even articulated. It gives us column-free workspace and turned the awkward corner into the building's most legible architectural move."
